Om Kareeka

Date: Jan 2013
Location: El Ahly Sporting Club Fence
Project: Collaboration with Ultras Ahly

The woman in the photo is the mother of the first martyr of the Ultras Ahly Club in Egypt. She is the mother of Mohamed Mostafa, who died on the 21st of December, 2011, at the age of 20 after being shot in the back during protests against the corrupt regime. Unlike 72 young men of the Ultras Ahly members who were massacred in the Port Said incident, Mohamed does not have a case and there will be no prosecutions against the shooter. His mother feels the killing of her son has passed the world so silently, and that he has been forgotten. Regardless, since Mohamed died, his mother committed to making his dream hers and started fighting for a better Egypt. This photograph is a tribute to Mohamed and what he revived in his mother and all those who were close to him.

The team took a photograph of the mother and, with the help of Mohamed’s friends, pasted it on the exterior of the high fences of the Ahly Club.

This project was a response to the French artist, JR’s, call to action. It’s aim was to remember one of the first martyrs whose case was never brought to justice.
